There’s a shortage of safe footpaths for Nairobi residents and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority – KURA has heeded the calls to make them accessible to pedestrians once again.
The roads agency has given 30 days notice to owners of illegal structures along Kayole Spine Road, Outering road, Manyanja Road and Jogoo Road reserves to remove them within the stipulated time or face demolition.
Politicians are now on the run to save their political cronies from the demolition after the notice was dispatched by KURA.
According to reports Embakasi Member of Parliament Babu Owino and his Makadara counterpart George Aladwa are mobilizing money from illegal structure owners and agents to bribe the authority to stop the demolitions.
KURA says the structures cause insecurity, blockage of the sewer lines and pedestrians can not walk freely.
“Personnel from the projects implementation team have variously met you and pointed out your encroaching presence in Kayole Spine Road Outer ring Road, Manyanja Road and Jogoo Road reserves which interfere with it’s safe usage particularly its walkway and also blocks off drainage causing pounding of storm waters that affects the integrity of the road, and that your presence a substantial security threat to road users and residents in the area.” The notice reads.
“PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that failure to act as directed above all will result in forcible removal of yourselves and encroaching matter disclosed above at your cost upon the expiry of the stipulated period. Further any such act in defiance on this notice shall additionally attract penal sanctions culminating in the institution of a criminal prosecution against yourselves, your agents and/or anyone acting on your behalf in that regard per section 49(6) of the Act.Be advised accordingly.” The notices states.
The structures includes erected tents in Makongeni Makadara ,business stalls along Kayole Spine Road,Manyanja road and business premises in Outering road reserves.
