A customer who went to Quickmart Buruburu branch was shocked to find a bread that expires after 6 months.
‘I picked the bread from the food section but was taken aback when I looked at the manufacture and expiry dates’, the client told Umoja News
Umoja News has since learnt that it might’ve been a mistake, however, the mistake has not been corrected at the time of writing.
In December 2019, a local blog run an exposé on a bread brand that was being prepared in dirty conditions and also adds dangerous additives to it to prolong its lifespan.
‘Sources say, DPL Festive prepare the bread with formalin, a chemical used to preserve dead bodies (cadavers),’ a local blog reported in 2019.
Though the company defended itself with a clean bill of health from the government agency KBS, the truth persisted with an employee leaning photos showing the dirty condition of the factory where the bread was being baked.
Supermarkets were also caught adding excess sodium metabisulphite to preserve meat for longer.

According to medical experts, ingesting pure sodium metabisulfite irritates your gastrointestinal system as it reacts with acid in your stomach by releasing sulfurous acid. Ingesting high amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, circulatory disturbance and central nervous system depression.
