Kenya Railways Corporation has released a statement concerning the train accident at Ruiru Railways crossing that claimed five lives.
“This evening while on its return from Ruiru, one of our freight trains carrying empty saddles hit a lorry which got stuck while trying to cross the rail track at an illegal level crossing. Police are at the scene and the injured have been rushed to hospital”, KRC wrote.
The firm says the commuter train to Ruiru had to cut its journey shot at commuters sought alternative means home due to the blockage of the railway track.
“Owing to line blockage passengers on the Ruiru train disembarked at Kahawa and used alternative means to their destinations. We wish the injured quick recovery and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We urge the public toys use designated railway level crossing”.
Though the statement didn’t contain he number of casualties in the Monday evening incident, witnesses say at least five people lost their lives.
Train accidents is a common thing on all commuter lines in Nairobi.
The most reported train in terms on accidents are those operating on the longer Ruiru – Nairobi line.
Kenya Railways is yet to clarify if the mess will be cleared by morning to allow commute from Ruiru to Nairobi.
