Complaints from motorists and residents that use the footpaths and service lane have fallen on deaf ears.
A 2021 investigation by the Nation Media Group revealed that hawkers who sell wares at footbriges were paying rent to Nairobi County government inspectorate officers (kanjos) and crooked high-ranking city police officers.
NMG did not reveal the amount they pay but Umoja News interviewed a hawker and she revealed it is Sh100 per day.
In the case of the high-value metal workshops that dorne the Mutindwa Outering, their bribe is higher.
The money is not paid per day, but monthly.
The govt might be building roads without putting people in the plans. However, Outering Road has suffered major violation of service lane. @KenyanTraffic pic.twitter.com/6AH9CX4I7X

The 10 metal workshops contribute a total of Sh300,000 being a payment of Sh30,000 per month.
Other businesses such as car rental, fashion kiosks, household flower products, shoe vendors, finished office furniture sellers etc contribute the remaining sum.
Our source revealed that the businesses pay promptly.
This explains why they are untouchable.
KURA officials, police and county governments askaris take bribe to maintain impunity and endanger road users.
More to come.
