Kenyan on Twitter (KoT) took to Twitter yesterday and today morning asking the government to ban the Umoja-Innercore (Umoinner) Sacco matatus because of reckless driving.
In an undated video that went viral on Tuesday morning, a Umoinner matatu KCW 047A christened ‘Master Mind’ was captured dangerously overtaking other road users in Nairobi. The unidentified driver plying the Umoja route nearly hit a Boda Boda rider going in the opposite direction.
That particular matatu was impounded, banned and the driver’s license confiscated by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)
Worst accident
In 2013, a Umoinner Sacco minibus was involved in an accident at the mutindwa market intersection. The bus failed to stop to allow a Ruiru-bound train to pass. 12 people died that day.
The Government later banned the sacco for some time.
“The mutindwa accident was the worst, but there have been other instances where Umoinner has been reckless, in fact their driving is characterized by recklessness”, said a resident who spoke to Umoja News

In August 2015, a Umoinner Sacco Matatu that was overspeeding along Ambila Rd in Shauro Moyo knocked down a mother who was taking her two kids to school, leaving one child dead while the mother and the other child were seriously injured. The body of the deceased child was taken to City Mortuary as the mother and the other child were rushed to Metropolitan Hospital.
Recently, a Umoinner Matatu was stuck at the mutindwa level crossing section, the Ruiru-bound train knocked it out of the train’s way, luckily no one was injured in the early morning incident.
