The High Court has upheld the impeachment of Mike Sonko as Nairobi Governor by Nairobi County Assembly and the Senate.
The 138-page ruling was delivered by a three-judge bench presided over by Justice Said Chitembwe and assisted by Justices Wilfrida Okwany and Weldon Korir.
Sonko was sent packing from office in December 2020 after 88 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) supported a motion accusing the governor of violating the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct with only two voting against it.
“We do not see any external hand in the impeachment of Sonko…We do not find any merit that his impeachment was engineered. We come to the conclusion that the impeachment of Sonko was constitutional…” Justice Chitembwe said.
Earlier on, the same court heard the petition to declare the appointment of Nairobi Deputy Governor Anne Kananu as illegal.
The court dismissed the petition and upheld that Nairobi Acting Governor Anne Kananu was constitutionally vetted and appointed.
“The court finds that the nomination, vetting, approval and swearing-in of Anne Kananu as the Deputy Governor was constitutional and lawful”
This is a double blow for former Governor Mike Sonko.
