Smooth-operating gangs have taken over the once-promising Umoja Estate as residents flee the madness.
Tucked between Outering – Kangundi – Kayole Spine and Manyanja Roads, Umoja Estate encompasses different phases used to enjoy a near middle-class status.
Now a former shell of itself, the once bursting Nairobi’s Camelot has continued to lose stature among the favoured addresses in Kenya’s capital city.
Umoja Estate has Umoja 1, Umoja 2, Tena and Innercore.
As it grew, the wealthiest people chose Tena as their address, but as recently as 2021, the once-well-lit area has fallen to darkness.
Thanks to vandalism from marauding gangs of burglars who pry on tenants in the wee hours of the night.
Gangs on foot patrol and prey on victims under the cover of darkness.
The newly opened Tena Police Post does nothing to curb the menace, only transferring the issue from one street to the next.
At some point, one would feel like the police officers are in cahoots with the robbers.
Sources intimate that the street lights lay unrepaired due to gangs ‘switching’ them off to create a good atmosphere to steal.
None of the local leaders, MCAs to MPs want to address the issue.
It is commendable, that MP Mark Mwenje and MCA Ronald Mugambi are improving accessibility.
By putting cabros and light traffic tarmack roads, the estate looks better, but with darkened streets, this is counterproductive.
