After a year and a half of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, many empty houses and business premises are beginning to appear in Umoja Estate and environs.
A few years ago, it was not quite easy to find a good rental house in Buruburu, Umoja and Donholm, but now they are abundant.
Though more advanced and learned sectors of the society in Nairobi; the landlords or agencies that manage houses in more affluent areas know this because of education and having or reading the housing markets statistics from Cytonn, Knhight Frank and Hass Consult, and in turn reduce rents. Landlords from Umoja Estate and larger Eastlands are ‘semi-illiterate’ and don’t know these, rents are still high.
‘More and more building are empty now. In the past, caretaker wlikuwa an maringo, lakini siku hizi nyumba ni mingi,’ said a Buruburu based hosuing agent.
Other areas
Nakuru
After six months of struggle with the coronavirus pandemic, all is not well for the property sector in Nakuru County.
The county has been greatly affected by the slowdown of business and employment activities, and hundreds of tenants have ended up being locked out of their houses for non-payment of rent.
Mombasa
The same issue of empty previously rented spaces in Mombasa has also been reported. This is blamed on COVID-19 and moving of the port to ICD Nairobi and eventually Mombasa.
