THE STAR:Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja Sunday announced that his administration has increased bursaries for deserving students across all wards in the capital.
And that is not all. The County Chief has also started rolling out sponsorship for needy bright students through secondary education through his Governor scholarship programme.
Speaking during a church service at Jesus Teaching Ministry in Embakasi East, Sakaja disclosed that he had tasked his County Chief Officers with the distribution of bursary forms in the City. By close of business Sunday, a total of 300 forms had been distributed across Nairobi.
“Get all candidates who sat for KCPE and performed well, getting above 350 marks, I will not give them bursaries for one term, I will sponsor them from Form One to Form Four. That is scholarship. I have brought you 50 forms. Those 50 young people, I will educate them until they finish high school,” He told the church
“These are full scholarships to support needy bright Secondary School Students from Nairobi County to access education in Public National, Extra-County and County Schools countrywide for the full four-year secondary school cycle” reiterated the Governor
This academic year Governor Sakaja indicated that he will release a total of Ksh 1.025 Billion in both Executive Scholarships and Ward Bursaries. Each of the 85 Wards will receive Ksh 6M, up from Ksh 4.5M received in 2022, in Ward Bursaries.
The Ward Bursaries are distributed through Ward Bursary Committees which shall be over sighted by the area MCAs. The remaining forms shall be distributed through Nairobi City County Public Primary Schools.
Sakaja noted that the process was open and warned that; “we will not condone corruption in Nairobi. And if we hear anybody trying to sell those scholarships or bursaries, they will go home immediately and they will be prosecuted,”
At the same time, the Nairobi County Chief has lauded the decision by President Wiliam Ruto to tour and launch development projects in Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s Nyanza political home tuff.
“We are happy to see the president embracing everybody like he did in Nyanza. Unity is what we require now. Politics ended, the election is over. Nairobians and Kenyans now want development,” Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
