President William Ruto has ordered police to use extra force in case their lives are in danger.
“We cannot allow criminals to overrun our cities or any other part of Kenya… If any officer is in danger of criminals, they must use their firearms to deal with them,” President William Ruto said.
The order goes against his initial stand on police and extrajudicial killings.
After his swearing in, Ruto disbanded and charged some officers attached to the Special Services Unit of the DCI who are suspected to have engaged in extrajudicial killings.
This was seen and lauded as a step forward and an end to extrajudicial killings.
His new about turn will cause uproar.
Human Rights organisations will be up in arms as police are likely to abuse the order and kill innocent citizens, some, to settle scores.
