Gaming firm Sportybet Kenya chapter has deactivated funds deposits amidst worsening woes over unpaid taxes.
“We are unable to accept your payment at this time. Please contact customer care for further assistance,” read the message to gamblers that are trying to deposit.
In February 2023, the firm’s website went offline as it sought to deal with the tax demands from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
Many bettors complained that their monies were stuck on the site without communication from the company if it would resume operations in Kenya.
SportyBet went offline for nearly two months amidst reports that the company owes KRA over Sh1.5 billion in unpaid taxes.
The Kenya Kwanza regime under President William Ruto is very keen in tax collections and has had a couple of firms fold or town the line.
BetKing
Another betting firm Betking paused operations before exiting Kenya due to tax issues.
“Our betting services in Kenya have been paused and are unavailable. For any further queries, please contact our customer centre on cs@betking.co.ke,” the firm wrote on their socials in February 2023.
