After taking power in 2013, Embakasi West Member of National Assembly (MP) launched a big drainage project on the Kifaru Primary school side.
Huge drainage holes were dug and for once it appeared that the usual drainage project that bedevilled the are, where big pools of water often collected for days on end was solved. However, 5 years after this fete, the Kifaru drainage menace seems to be rearing its ugly head.
At the end of July, pictures appeared online showing the area to have been flooded.
MP Theuri’s works had solved 80 per cent of the problem, because the new pool of water now collects at the gates between Tumaini and Kifaru Primary schools as opposed to the road intersection as in the past.
The pool of water is also shallow.
Nonetheless, it cannot be ignored.
When it rains, Umoja’s Moi Drive turns into a river in some sections, namely, Umoja 2, Peacock, former Jeska supermarket areas. Most of the water that collects on the Junction near First Love church is what transfers towards Tumaini and KIfaru Primary school areas.
Residents have always called out the MP to solved this.
The road, Moi Drive has best drainage although some places have been blocked by garbage, another menace in Umoja Estate.
The areas around PCEA Church Umoja, there’s a collapsed drainage due to the weight of the soil.
Areas around former Jeska supermarket, the drainage is filled with garbage to the brim.
All the metallic coverings of the Moi Drive drainage system that would have prevented garbage from getting in have been vandalized.
Garbage litter many parts of the estate.
With good feeder roads in and around the estate, maybe people can begin t appreciate their surroundings and shun throwing garbage anyhow.
The elected leaders in Umoja 1, Umoja 2, Innercore, Mowlem, and Kariobangi south must come together to solve the garbage and drainage problems in Umoja Estate.
