Three individuals, Stephen Mutua, Tom Kioko Kitonga, and Abdul Mohammad, have been arraigned in a Nairobi court following accusations of robbing a woman, Eunice Nyambura, of her mobile phone valued at Sh13,000 on Outering Road. The arrest was made by Buruburu police officers on December 17.
The trio faces charges of violent robbery and possession of a counterfeit firearm, a violation of the Firearm Act, as stated in the charge sheet. The alleged fake firearm, as per the court documents, was a composite of wood and metal, suggesting an intent to commit a crime.
Nyambura was returning home with a friend when she was confronted by two men armed with a knife and a gun. They ordered her to lie down and threatened her with harm if she resisted. They forcibly took her mobile phone, then escaped on a waiting motorcycle.
Fortunately, two patrolling officers from the Buruburu police station noticed the motorcycle and intercepted it. The suspects were unable to satisfactorily identify themselves or explain their actions, leading the officers to search them. This search yielded a fake gun and five mobile phones, one of which was identified as Nyambura’s.
After reporting the incident, Nyambura was later asked to identify her phone among those recovered. The suspects pleaded not guilty in a Makadara law court and were granted bail of Sh800,000. Their case is set for hearing on June 20, 2024.
