Buruburu Girls Secondary School has sent students home for lack of school fees. Most of those sent homeare in their fourth form preparing to sit for their final KCSE exams.
“Please come to our rescue…hide my identity to avoid victimisation. So form 4 students of BuruBuru girls are being sent home not because of school fees but because of development funds. Really? On the 15th day of the month? Girls were released on Friday headteacher claiming that they needed to refresh before exams. They were to report back before 1 pm. The shock on us that they were instead sent back home. Almost 3/4 sent back home”, a parent wrote.
In November 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha cautioned headteachers against sending students back home over fee.
“I would like to very firmly plead with our teachers that they have no permission from anybody to send a child home because of school fees,” he said.
Prof Magoha had advised that school managers explore dialogue with parents and guardians instead. He, however, stated that the directive was only meant for public school and that parents with children in private schools would be required to pay school fees.
If you have no fees, come back to public school, we will take your child because the government has directed that we should have 100 per cent transition,” he advised.
