According to Urban Mobility expert Claudia Adriazola-Steil, Outering Road is unsafe.
‘An example from Kenya, but this is not the only example around the world. This happens over and over again. But there was an investment in an highway, an urban highway named Outering. That in the first nine months of 2021. It has been the most dangerous road in the city with very (many) fatalities. Ninety percent of them were pedestrians…’, Claudia Adriazola-Steil told the UN

Outering Road is a 13-kilometre road in Nairobi’s Eastlands Area, that joins Mombasa road to Thika Superhighway.
Its construction was funded by the African Development Bank.
The engineering firms were awarded by the corruption-riddled Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
Chinese firm Sinohydro Corporation was the lead. Others were Lee International Canada in joint venture with Lea Associates S. East Asia who were the consultants for the project.
AfDB also funded the well-maintained Thika Superhighway which has fewer fatalities and didn’t cut corners on space for the road.
Outering Road has abruptly ending lanes, and is incomplete in drainage plans.
Currently, the road is too dark at night as all street lights have been vandalised. Pedestrian pathways are filled with hawkers selling all manner of wares.
Uproar by road users has fallen on deaf ears.
